The government is trying to show fair elections

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury commented that the government has tried to show fair elections through Gazipur City Corporation elections.

He said this at the 28th anniversary ceremony of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday (May 26).

He said, a lot can be said about Gazipur election. A fair election has to be shown, so the government has shown it in Gazipur.

Khosru said, if the democratic environment is not restored in the country, restrictions will continue to come one after another.

He said, the election discussion will come later. Level playing field must be ensured first. Before bringing back the country’s democratic environment, election talks are a failed talk. Those who are talking about election talks before bringing back the democratic environment of the country, they are working for this government.

The BNP leader said that whatever freedom the media has, the government is suppressing it with the Digital Security Act. Besides, journalists are under threat for some people today. Many have left the country. But everyone has to work together to restore standards in journalism.

Khosru also said that the visa policy formulated by the United States has mentioned the responsibility of the media and fair elections. That means, democracy, human rights, voting rights, rule of law, safety of life, freedom of speech cannot be achieved without the participation of journalists.
