Veteran actor Amarnath Mukherjee passed away on Friday. He breathed his last in Mumbai. His contribution to the world of Bengali cinema (Tollywood) remains a lot. From the movie ‘Mouchak’ with Uttamkumar to ‘Basant Bilap’ with Soumitra Chatterjee, the actor’s smart presence in many Bengali movies caught the attention of the audience. But in the end he could not work due to physical illness. After he moved to Mumbai with his family, nobody even looked for him.
Amarnath Mukhopadhyay was born on September 11, 1933 in Calcutta. Acting is probably his birth. His father was the then renowned actor Harendranath Mukherjee. Even his uncle Johar Mukherjee was an actor. So Amarnath cherished the desire to act in himself since childhood. He initially started acting with plays.
Amarnath Mukhopadhyay acted in many movies like ‘Har Mana Har’, ‘Chinnapatra’, ‘Stree’, ‘Basant Bilap’, ‘Mouchak’, ‘Swayansiddha’. The actor was not limited to Tollywood only. Amarnath also acted in Hindi movies like ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Amanush’. He last acted in the movie ‘Alo’ directed by Tarun Majumdar. In 2005, the actor left Kolkata for Mumbai with his son and family. After that, he could not act in special movies because of his body. Amarnath Mukhopadhyay’s death casts a shadow of grief on the minds of veteran actors of Toli Para.
